In this masterpiece, O'Houlihan develops several earlier themes and then adds the quantitative idea of a 'fourth dimension,' which, as we know now, was to become a popular cliché in later years. The free and flowing use of planes (by which an opaque object may become transparent) has never been more gloriously achieved, whether through synthetic Dreco or collage. Form may, of course, signify itself, as in collage - or an antipodal aspect may follow. Bullfight illustrates only too plainly the wrenching decision that O'Houlihan faced: to solidify a transparent void, or to nullify a vinyl davenport?
